Introduction to Colossians: The Fullness of God Revealed in Jesus of Nazareth
Colossians: The Fullness of God Revealed in Jesus of Nazarethh
Introduction and Purpose
Foreword
The book of Colossians is about clarity. It confronts confusion, corrects compromise, and calls believers to center their entire lives on Jesus Christ. In a world full of ideas, traditions, philosophies, and spiritual trends, Colossians gives the church a firm foundation. It tells us plainly: Christ is enough.
This letter was written to a young church being pulled in different directions. Some were drawn to religious rituals. Others were tempted by cultural wisdom or secret knowledge. But Paul does not argue with all the competing voices. He simply lifts up Jesus. He shows that Christ is the image of the invisible God, the Creator of all things, the Head of the church, the hope of glory, and the fullness of God in bodily form.
I preached through this book during a season when clarity was hard to come by. Our church, like many others, was facing pressure from within and without. We were discerning next steps, questioning methods, and navigating the distractions of a noisy world. It became obvious that what we needed was not a better plan or a louder platform. We needed to see Jesus clearly again.
Colossians became an anchor. It reminded us that everything begins and ends with Christ. Our identity, our salvation, our growth, our mission, all of it depends on Him. We do not graduate from the gospel. We do not add to Christ or move beyond Him. We are called to walk in Him, be rooted in Him, and let His peace rule in our hearts as His Word dwells richly in us.
This series was written for our local church, but it holds a message for every believer. You are not missing anything if you have Christ. In Him, you have forgiveness, purpose, power, and hope. And He is not distant. He is present, supreme, and sufficient.
My hope is that these reflections will stir your affections for Jesus, strengthen your confidence in His finished work, and help you guard your heart against any philosophy or passion that draws you away from trusting what God has revealed in the person of Christ. Colossians is not just an ancient letter. It is a call to hold fast to the Head, to rejoice in the mystery revealed, and to proclaim the glory of Christ with both our words and our lives.
